MUSC2700: BEYOND ROCK

Well, for those of you who asked, it looks as if I will be teaching Beyond Rock next semester. Below is the blurb on the course from last year, although I'll be modifying it somewhat.

I will warn those interested that there may be some overlap
between Beyond Rock and Music Subcultures and the Media, as my plan is to
turn it into a bridging course between From Elvis to Madonna and Music Subcultures and the Media. That way if I teach Music Subcultures next year, I can cut out some of the music industry and history stuff and concentrate on the cultural theory.

Don't have the timetable yet, but I've asked for Fridays or Mondays.

MUSC2700: BEYOND ROCK
Music in the Digital Age
Beyond Rock examines the key stylistic, technological and industrial developments in contemporary popular music that have occurred since the arrival of digital audio and MTV in 1982. Through a study of these developments students will come to understand not only the increasing dominance of digital technology in the music industry but also the numerous stylistic and historical developments during this period.
Beginning with the post-punk rock/MTV-driven New Wave and New Romantics genres, the course engages with the major musical styles and artists (both in the international and Australian contexts) right up to the present day. Students will critically examine a wide range of music styles - from purely commodity-driven "pop/rock" styles to those which have been used to highlight socio-political issues. They will also examine the ways in which music technology has influenced new styles of music.
Beyond Rock will enable students to engage with past and present music forms and provide them with the critical ability to analyse objectively the complex nature of both contemporary music and the music industry.

(These are my Harvard style versions. Other recognised versions--MLA, Chicago etc--are acceptable if used consistently and make sense).

The important thing is to make clear where you got all your information from--you get high marks for exhibiting intelligent research, not for "knowing stuff off the top of your head".

* Please study the difference between commas (,), colons (:), and semi-colons (;).

Example:

Several problems have come to light during the marking of your essays, a few of which are as follows: firstly, the use of semi-colons where commas would be more appropriate; secondly, the use of semi-colons where colons would be more appropriate; and, thirdly, a lack of commas in many longer sentences.

* Those aspects of your first essay that are crucial to an understanding of your second should be restated (and re-referenced). The second essay has to stand on its own--it is not simply a continuation of the first.

* Journalism students: this is not a journalism class. Please present your work
in a format appropriate for this academic discipline, cultural studies.

MSTU2000/7010: Music Subcultures and the Media
Semester One, 2006
Essay Two

Due: 5pm Wednesday 14 June, EMSAH office essay collection bin (4th floor Michie Building)
Length: 2500 words (MSTU2000)/3000 words (MSTU 7010)
Weight: 50%

Task: Develop an original research question that examines the relationship between one of the following three topics and a specific subculture or scene.

1. New media and/or digital technologies
2. The local and the global
3. Traditional mainstream and/or alternative media

(For example, you might investigate how file sharing is affecting a particular subculture, whether there is really anything "local" about a particular local scene, or how a particular subculture has made use of the street press.) Variations from these three examples must receive prior approval from your tutor.

Your essay should show evidence of primary and secondary research and should be structured around a clear argument. You should make it clear which of the theories or readings have most relevance to your topic. As you are limited to 2500/3000 words, it is essential that you establish a manageable and focused research question, so it is advisable to discuss your ideas with your tutor
well in advance.

Presentation: In all matters of presentation and referencing, adhere strictly to the EMSAH Style Guide, available through the School of EMSAH website. You can download the guide from the Resources page (http://www.emsah.uq.edu.au/index.html?page=17256&pid=). There can be no excuses for poor style presentation with this second essay. Failure to comply will result in severe marking penalties for the relevant criteria section.

Extensions: Extensions will be granted only in exceptional circumstances (e.g. a serious illness or family emergency), and even then only prior to the due date. Work commitments and assessment workloads are generally not acceptable reasons for submitting work late. If you require an extension, you must approach your tutor before the due date. Essays submitted late without an extension will be penalised 10% of the total mark per day.

You can use this blog as a forum to discuss the course and post material relevant to your chosen subcultural activity. In regard to assessment you must provide at least three serious research-based entries. These can take the form of an analysis of a website that you have found, a discussion of a web ring, a survey of related blogs, some first person 'ethnographic' reportage (eg. your own observations from a live gig or related event; a complete transcript of an interview you conducted that you may or may not include excerpts from in your essays), your own review of a related documentary/DVD/CD, etc.

You can provide links to other sources or sites of interest, but remember that a link alone is not enough to be counted for assessment.

1. Fill in the boxes marked ‘Choose a user name’ (no spaces), ‘Enter a password’, ‘Retype password’, ‘Display name’, and ‘Email address’. (Note that your first choice for user name and password may be rejected if they are already being used. You may have to use a nickname, but please use your real full name as your ‘Display name’ so I can identify you). What is a research weblog?

There are many kinds of weblogs (personal diaries, creative writing, tech blogs, news blogs, war blogs), but in the context of this course we are only dealing with research blogs. In the context we’re using them they could be defined as networked research journals.

A research weblog is quite a few things

• a Content Management System (CMS)• a collection of annotated resources• a discourse community• a reflective critical space• a public writing and thinking

What makes up a blog?

• regular writing • noting (through commentary and links) other online resources• noting (through commentary and links) other weblogs• writing ‘out’ of ideas, problems, solutions, and questions

What a blog isn’t

A blog is not the same as a diary or a journal.

It is

public
networked (interlinked)
dynamic (constantly updated)
internally and externally reflective i.e. not (only) argumentative or factual
informal but critical in style, i.e. midway between academic discourse (as in your essay) and interpersonal discourse (as in chatting with/emailing friends)

Of course, the best way to learn what an effective research blog is all about is to visit some and to develop your own.

Why use a blog?

Different people blog for quite different reasons. A research blog documents your research, your ideas and activities. It is informal, but by writing out your ideas you give them more purchase. It also helps you to connect and engage in reflective dialogue with people thinking and writing about similar topics and issues (i.e. your colleagues in the course, and quite possibly far beyond the course)

Details of assessment task

Rationale

The weblog assessment task is designed to develop and encourage:
Network and computer literacy
Critical evaluation of a wide range of sources
An appropriate writing style for communicating your ideas to a non-academic audience
A direct engagement with the music cultures that you are studying
Finally, the assessment of this task rewards the processes of learning and research, and not just their products.

Extent of Task

The weblog task will be assessed based on entries you make between Wednesday 26 April and Wednesday 31 May. During this time you should post a minimum of 3 substantial entries (i.e. entries including significant input from you, rather than just a link with a brief comment) per week.

Weighting: 15%

Content Guidelines

What you write in your weblog is largely up to you, as long as it is directly relevant to the themes and content of the course - particularly, the second half of the course. However, you will probably find the task most useful if you use it as an opportunity to collect and comment on material that relates to your topic for the second essay, reflect on the research and writing process for the essay, and/or engage in discussion with others about your ideas.

Criteria

Amount and quality of content (Frequency of entries, appropriate balance between original ideas and references to other sources, relevance of content, appropriate writing style)
Marks: 5

Demonstration of network literacy (linking to and commenting on the work of others, and responding to visitors' comments appropriately)
Marks: 5

Demonstration of critical thinking (depth of engagement; demonstration ability to evaluate sources and use them to think through issues relevant to the course)
