Essay 2 checklist

* Referencing Websites

If you can locate an author name and year, use them in the in-text reference:

According to the All Music Guide, The Brian Jonestown Massacre's debut LP Methodrone was 'shoegazer-influenced' (Ankeny 2006).

If not, use a shortened version of the site's name: (allmusic.com)

Depending on the amount of citation information you can find, the listing
in the bibliography would look like one of these:

Ankeny, Jason 2006, 'The Brian Jonestown Massacre' , Allmusic, http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll, Accessed 22 May.

or

'The Brian Jonestown Massacre', Allmusic, http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll, Accessed 22 May.

or

Allmusic, http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll, Accessed 22 May.

Referencing Primary Interviews

According to actress Charlize Theron, 'Cory Messenger is one of the most handsome and charming men I've ever had the pleasure to meet.' (Interview with author)

Bibliography

Theron, Charlize 2006, email interview with author, May 22.

(These are my Harvard style versions. Other recognised versions--MLA, Chicago etc--are acceptable if used consistently and make sense).

The important thing is to make clear where you got all your information from--you get high marks for exhibiting intelligent research, not for "knowing stuff off the top of your head".

* Please study the difference between commas (,), colons (:), and semi-colons (;).

Example:

Several problems have come to light during the marking of your essays, a few of which are as follows: firstly, the use of semi-colons where commas would be more appropriate; secondly, the use of semi-colons where colons would be more appropriate; and, thirdly, a lack of commas in many longer sentences.

* Those aspects of your first essay that are crucial to an understanding of your second should be restated (and re-referenced). The second essay has to stand on its own--it is not simply a continuation of the first.

* 1960s, 1970s—not 60s, 70s, or sixties, seventies

* Songs: ‘Sabotage’, ‘Root Down’
Albums: Ill Communication
Band: Beastie Boys

* Italics/underline for book, film & journal titles. Consult the EMSAH style guide.

* Double space; in-text references (not footnotes); indented quotes are single spaced, but don’t need italics or quote marks or smaller font

* Collect cohesive ideas into readable paragraphs

* Introduction, conclusion (write both last): clearly state your intentions/argument/methodology etc. in the introduction.
Sum up the essay in the conclusion.
* Use some recognised (ie, published in a book, journal or refereed online journal) cultural studies or media theory. Lazy internet research (eg. Wikipedia) is not acceptable.

* Journalism students: this is not a journalism class. Please present your work
in a format appropriate for this academic discipline, cultural studies.

(Check back here periodically for further tips/warnings)

Yes, spaces are required before and after the indented quotation; I'm referring to the lines within the block quotation.

Cory... Can I ask a question...?

Do we have to give basic overviews of things we've already discussed in essay 1 if we're expanding on them in essay 2? Or do we just start talking and assume you remember what we're talking about?

Shan - this is irony, right?

Grace - Can I answer a question?
Those aspects of your first essay that are crucial to an understanding of your second should be restated
(and as you for one didn't use any references in your first essay, you owe me).
Always assume that you are writing for an audience that doesn't know what you're talking about (Be careful with your response to this remark).

Oh, so the same technique you used in your essay.

Yes, Cory. Thank you, Cory.

You know everything, Cory.

Sorry Cory, I have another question *blushes*. Well, two, actually. Well... four.

1) How do we cite websites in our essay?

2) How do we reference websites in our bibliography if there was no specific article to reference - ie. If it was a review of the website itself?

3) How do we cite interviews (primary research) in our essay?

4) How do we reference primary research interviews in our bibiography?

By "we", I mean "I". By "our", I mean "my".

And please don't say "check the emsah guide", because I already did that and it wasn't very helpful.

Bloody kids. I'll add a note to this posting soon.

Thanks Shan. It's nice to know that you're a representative for all emos out there.

I knew there was a reason those kids at the mall pissed me off.

Oh, you don't have to put your eyeliner away. I endorse eyeliner (i wear it religiously), and I think it looks incredibly hot on certain people (*cough* Westlifers *cough*)

So don't worry about that.

Do you not have a job? That is sad. How do you pay for your eyeliner?

Thank you Cory! We young people have a word for your type. That word is: "helpful"

Thanks! Expect my essay amd bibliography to be very correctly cited and referenced.

And I'll wear my Westlife shirt, just to spite Shan.

Or... one of my Westlife shirts. Damn, now I have to choose.
