Nice clip; shame about the singing. That band would be so much better with Dave Navarro and Flea with some random has-been on vocals. and maybe as an improvement, Meg White on the skins (thats right, i said improvement, yes i know she is completely useless).

bass playing so boring? dude, he's the most innovative, melodic bass player in years, not the mention his tone. that is the bass-playing tone of the gods. And as for John playing better than navarro, you gotta be kidding me. All John does is play some sharp funk chords then a pentatonic scale, then some more sharp chords with the occasional arpeggio. Navarro is a lead guitar master and plays with real flare and phrasing, not to mention his innovative chord voicings.

I watch the clip with the sound off, that way I don't have to worry about the flat singing, pedestrian drumming, scratchy fake-jazz guitar, or clunky fake-funk bass playing. I can just get off on the illogical arrogance of the entire 'RHCP as the teleological culmination of rock history' concept.

I, as like most people was shockingly a fan of Red Hot Chilli Peppers. After a few years of listenning to them, i can make a few points. Apart from flea, no one in the band actually knows how to play an instrument. The guitarist knows like 1 riff which is played in every song, hence making every song sound the same.

One good thing to mention, the chilli peppers don't exactly fit into any other subculture. Over the years they changed their style alot. this is partly becasue they sucked so much. The vocalist even had a mowhawk. they have their own crappy style which has managed to fool many people (even me for a while) into thinking that they were a great band.

im a pretty big Petty fan, and i didn't notice it really. i mean, lyrically and thematically they are similar, but its hardly enough to accuse them of plagiarism. IMHO - the Tom Petty song is freakin' awesome, the chilli peppers song is mediocre at best.

I actually forced myself to listen to that slop again. And when you are listening, it does sound similar to Last Dance. Well, except that Petty and the Heartbreakers can play, and write a song without mentioning California a million times each verse. I would seriously love to see The Heartbreakers get a slice of the chilli peppers' pie (i.e. all their royalties, ever)
